Title: The Enemy Within (Vampire Born, #2)
Author: Angeline Kace
Publisher: Accendo Press, 2012

Synopsis: Half-vampire, Brooke Keller, rid the world of her worst enemy, only to find out the world's most powerful vampire wants her dead. And this time, she's not only fighting vampires, but a deadly disease that threatens to take her best friend's life.
Torn between Jaren and Mirko, Brooke struggles to convince her best friend to change over, keep her monster at bay, and learns her enemies are deeper within than she could have ever imagined.

Will love be enough to quell the darkness?

Does good really conquer evil?

Holy Moly! First off, great cover! Totally fits Brooke's character! Also, love the blue this time around. And, the synopsis?!? WOW! I thought I needed the second book after finishing the first, but this just kicked it all up many, many notches! Angeline - Gimme! Please?

If you haven't read Descended By Blood, the first book in the Vampire Born
series, you have no idea what you're missing!

29 September 2011

Guess what ladies and gentlemen? It's that time of the year again. For those of you who are already well-aware of Haunted Halloween, you know what crazy things are about to happen. If you are new to the event just >>>CLICK HERE<<< to see what we did last year.

This is the 2nd year of Haunted Halloween: True Tales of the Paranormal and Jessica (from Confessions of a Bookaholic) and I have been working tirelessly to try to make this year's event even better!

What Can You Expect?

Last year we gave away around 150 books and featured over 65 authors. This year we are expecting it to exceed that amount by quite a few! And, that's not all. We have added other giveaways to the mix. We have some incredible donations from a few etsy stores and other "bookish" places.

But it gets better! You know how we all love authors, right? They are pretty much our celebrities? Well what if you had something unique and custom made from one of your favorite authors? Not just signed...but actually designed by them and completely one-of-a-kind. Stay tuned for more information on that! We gotta keep a few things secret :)

Contests

We will be having some large giveaways and those include the Cover and Story contests. We will also be running the Comment Contest throughout the month of October. Information on all of this will be posted tomorrow and Saturday.

Pretty much each day we will be posting an "extra" giveaway during the evening. Those are special items that have been donated.

Each day both blogs will have an author guest post. Most of those posts will have a giveaway attached. Those items were donated by the author or from the publicist.

Twitter Party

Last year we had a twitter party and it was insane! It absolutely exceeded my expectations and we had a blast. We plan to do that again this year but we will have even more giveaways going on. People will have the chance to answer trivia questions (related to the author posts) and win books or swag. We will post more details on that next week.

Thanks to Tawni from Forever Design Studio for making this year's graphics!

Lie or Die Flash Fiction Showdown: Step 1: Submit Your Idea Now!

Here is your chance to come up with a story idea and have not 1 but 5 authors spin it into an 800 word flash fiction tale! That’s 5 different YA paranormal authors with their own style and their own creativity taking your idea in 5 directions! Where will they go? You’ll have to wait until Oct 19th to find out.

But, for now, get your story idea in! You have from Sept 29, 2011 12:00am to Oct 8th, 2011 11:59pm EST to submit your ideas by choosing characters, conflict and abilities. Details are in the form, which is at the bottom of the post. Only entries into the form will be considered.

Anyone can enter their idea (open to international) and the winning idea will win a print book of their choice from one of the participating authors. What should you enter? Well, seeing as all of the authors are YA Paranormal writers,  chances are anything to do with a hot, young heroine/hero of the non-human type will spark their interest. But, so could a grotesque villain…Should it be regular old Earth or a dystopian world? Should unicorns frolic and mermaids flap about? Should there be a love triangle? YOU DECIDE!

Example:

Characters - "Bill" - a male vampire, tall, dark and boring, prefers computers to good times, over 150 years old. "Sookie" - a female human, blond, barmaid, perky, Southern, sweet and hospitable but will resort to extreme violence when provoked.

Conflict - Someone wants Sookie dead. People she knows are being killed and it looks like Sookie is next. AND, there's a new vampire in town. He's tall, blond, sexy and powerful. While Bill may be old reliable, there's just something about Eric that she can't resist.

Abilities - "Bill" - speed, strength, can heal with his blood. "Sookie" - telepathic, good with a shotgun.

On Oct 9th, our 5 expert judges a.k.a fabulous bloggers Fiktshun, Two Chicks on Books, Magical Urban Fantasy Reads,  A Life Bound by Books, and Taking it One Book at a Time, will choose THE IDEA, based purely on what sounds like the most fun to read about and announce it at Sunday, 6pm EST.

From there, the authors will have 10 days to take the idea and run with it. For more details about the Lie or Die event, >>>CLICK HERE<<< to visit the official event page.

Want to know a little bit more about the authors participating?

SM Reine
SM Reine: SM Reine is a writer and graphic designer obsessed with werewolves, the occult, and collecting swords. Her YA fantasy books, "Six Moon Summer" and "All Hallows' Moon," have been praised as "fresh and fast-paced" and "captivating." Sara spins tales of dark fantasy to escape the drudgery of the desert, where she lives with her husband and the Helpful Baby. Visit her at her website HERE.

G.P. Ching

G.P.Ching: Author of The Soulkeepers (DarkSide Publishing, 2011) and rebel suburbanite who makes wicked cookies, kicks patootie at Guitar Hero, and thinks guinea pigs are the perfect pet. Visit her at her website HERE.

Tiffany King
Tiffany King: Hi, my name is Tiffany King the author of the Paranormal/Romance YA novel “Meant to Be” and "Forgotten Souls" and I’m practically a native Floridian. My family and I have been here for the last fourteen years and have gotten quite used to the mild winters and scorching summers. I went back to school when I turned 31 and will finish up this spring. I wrote my book “Meant to Be” two years into my degree program and put it on hold while I finished school. Of course my degree has nothing to do with writing *drat* but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to keep writing. During this process with “Meant to Be” I discovered just how much I love to write and I have many story ideas tucked away. Visit her at her website HERE.

Megan Duncan

Megan Duncan: Megan Duncan is a lover of all things paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi and anything just out of the ordinary. She is continually fighting her addiction to chocolate and living in her overactive imagination. Visit her at her website HERE.

K.A. Tucker
K.A.Tucker: Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons. She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit. Kathleen currently resides in a quaint small town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures. Asylum, the sequel to Anathema,  will be released January, 2012. Visit her at her website HERE.

UPDATE: Starting Friday, 9/30, for a daily chance to win an eBook from Amazon of one of the participating author's books of your choice, submit your idea and tweet the following:
"I submitted my story idea for the #LieOrDie event! Go submit yours http://bit.ly/oAbLbI!"
You only need to submit one idea, but you can have a chance to win an eBook each day through October 8th, by tweeting and spreading the word. The daily winners will be announced on Twitter.

So, now it's YOUR turn!
Give the authors YOUR ideas!

Review: Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Book Light

Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Book Light

Review: 5 Stars - It’s easy for me to say that I've been a fan of Mighty Bright book lights for years now. They are my go-to book light. They have changed over the years, become smaller, brighter, batteries last longer and the arm of the light changed from the stiff thing that only bends at 2 or 3 joints to something flexible and pliable. With one of the newest book lights from Mighty Bright they have stepped things up again and made the light have two settings.

Click for more info.

With the latest find from Mighty Bright, the XtraFlex2, I knew I’d found a book light that was the perfect fit for me. I’ve purchased many lights from Mighty Bright in the past and now this has become my favorite!

I love the fact that it now has two brightness settings! It makes using it to read on both my Kindle and books (hard cover or soft cover) perfect. Seriously, if you have this light, there’s no need to own two different lights, one for Kindle or one for actual books.

Light weight, easy to use, sturdy, added bonus of two brightness settings, there’s not much more I could have asked for when we’re talking book lights. I love my Mighty Bright of the past, present and will continue to love them on into the future.

For more information on Mighty Bright, their products and where you can purchase your own book light that you'll also fall in love with - please visit their website >>>HERE<<<

A HUGE thank you goes out to Mighty Bright for the book light to review.

"Just Picked" is a new Feature here at A Life Bound By Books. Now and then I'll be sharing with you various picture books that I've come across that I think everyone with kids, or even adults will love to read or would even make a great coffee table book.

Title: Leap Back Home to Me
Author: Lauren Thompson
Illustrator: Matthew Cordell
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books, 32 Pages (April 26th 2011)
Age Range: 4-8
Order Online: Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository
From: the Publisher, Thank You!

Synopsis: A little frog’s first leap out into the world is a big, scary thing. But luckily, mama is always there to catch him when he comes home. As the leaps get bigger, frog gets braver—and before he knows it, he’s soaring out to the moon and beyond!
This loveable little frog will hurdle his way into your heart. Come leap along, and see what it’s like to shoot for the stars . . . and always have a landing pad ready to catch you.

Review: 4 Stars - Leap Back To Me By Author Lauren Thompson & Matthew Cordell is a sweet story about a frog and his first steps away from home. First small, gaining in size with each leap he takes. The moral of the story, which is told in cute pictures and equally cute story, is that you can always go home and how mom will be there to come home to with open arms after each “leap” away is a great story for younger kids. It’s a great lesson to kids about getting older.

*Please note that this is feature here that I have created specifically for my blog. Should you wish to have a feature like this, please be sure to make it all your own. Thank You.

Title: The Urban Fantasy Anthology
Author: Various Authors
Publisher: Tachyon Publications, 432 Pages (August 15th 2011)
From: the Publisher, Thank You!

Synopsis: Star-studded and comprehensive, this imaginative anthology brings a myriad of modern fantasy voices under one roof. Previously difficult for readers to discover in its new modes, urban fantasy is represented here in all three of its distinct styles—playful new mythologies, sexy paranormal romances, and gritty urban noir. Whether they feature tattooed demon-hunters, angst-ridden vampires, supernatural gumshoes, or pixelated pixies, these authors—including Patricia Briggs, Neil Gaiman, and Charles de Lint—mash-up traditional fare with pop culture, creating iconic characters, conflicted moralities, and complex settings. The result is starkly original fiction that has broad-based appeal and is immensely entertaining.

Review: 4 Stars - Urban Fantasy Anthology By: Various authors is thrilling, fun and highly entertaining read from many of our favorite authors. Reading a quick story is sometimes the best medicine when looking for a dose of your favorite author.

With stories ranging from Zombies to witches and everything in between it was easy to find many stories within this Anthology that I wish I could have read more of. See, that’s the thing with an Anthology, getting a taste and making you eager for more.

Some of my favorites include, but are not limited to – (in order on how they appeared in the book) The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories By: Neil Gaiman, A Haunted House of Her Own By: Kelley Armstrong, She’s My Witch By: Norman Partidge, Kitty’s Zombie New Year By: Carrie Vaughn, Seeing Eye By: Patricia Briggs, Farewell, My Zombie By: Francesca Lia Block, and the Coldest Girl in Coldtown By Holly Black.

I think that the story that stands out for me the most of the ones mentioned would have to be the Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. I really enjoyed that story from beginning to end. It could have been a full length book and the ending was shocking but perfect.

All in all, I might not be mentioning all the stories in this book, but the ones I am talking about in this review were my favorites. Anyone who likes a good Anthology filled with incredible authors should defiantly pick this one up. There’s a story in there that’ll stick with you, just as Coldest Girl in Coldtown has stuck with me.
